Former Buccos reliever Scott Sauerbeck died Tuesday at the age of 53.
Sauerbeck spent five of his seven seasons with the Pirates, going 19-15 with a 3.82 ERA in 308 innings. He was traded to Boston in 2003, signed with Cleveland in 2005 and finished his career in Oakland the following season.
Pittsburgh Baseball Now’s John Perrotto said Sauerbeck’s cause of death was a fatal heart attack that he suffered in Bradenton.
The team has not released an official statement.
