The Pirates have found their fifth starter, yesterday signing veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney to a one-year contract, pending a physical.
Heaney is an 11-year veteran who has played the last two seasons for the Texas Rangers, winning a World Series title two years ago, when he was 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA. Last season, he was 5-14 with a 4.28 earned run average. He’s also played for the Marlins, Angels, Yankees, and Dodgers. Heaney and Bailey Falter in the rotation give the Pirates two lefties to offset fireballing right-handers Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and Jared Jones.
The Pirates open the exhibition season tomorrow in Sarasota against the Orioles.
