Indiana fire and police departments are investigating how gasoline got into a storm water sewer this morning in Indiana Borough.

The call went out at 8:04 this morning for what was initially termed a gas leak at the Rose Building on Eighth Street when the investigation lead fire crews to the storm sewer grates near the intersection of Eighth and Gompers Avenue, where the smell of gasoline was discovered. Police and fire officials also noticed a black SUV on jacks in the borough’s Eighth Street parking lot, with the fuel tank on the ground. Officials believe that the suspect dumped gasoline out of the tank and into the storm sewer system.

Paul Koons with the Indiana Fire Association says it should not affect the tap water for borough residents.
Borough work crews were called in to open the grates so the system can be flushed. The investigation is ongoing.
